Summary:
Five years after moving to South Africa, Kevin van Vliet returns to the Netherlands to apply for a new work visa. There, he is confronted with his former self and risks losing his employment and sanity. The account of that visit, in novel form, follows a young journalist on a journey through the ruins of his past.
Van Vliet (1993) worked seven years behind the scenes of journalism – first HP/De Tijd, then Hilversum, then to the newspapers – and is currently a correspondent in South Africa for Trouw and Het Financieele Dagblad.
His literary debut, the novella Wolfsjong (2019), nominated for a Bronze Owl, as well as the short novel Bobbejaanskloof (2023) are sketches compared to the prose that has now broken out below the equator. With Jong en eenzaam Van Vliet launches an attack on the current state of Dutch literature. This is the novel our sleepy, introverted language area has been waiting for.
