Summary:

Paris, 1720. The psychiatric hospital La Salpêtrière has too many residents and too few beds. On the other side of the world, the French colony of La Louisiane, on the other hand, has plenty of space and needs women with whom the colonists can start families. Nearly a hundred female 'volunteers' of childbearing age from La Salpêtrière – orphans, prisoners, and psychiatric patients – are shipped to La Louisiane. Among them are three unlikely friends: a sharp-tongued twelve-year-old orphan, a fallen aristocrat struggling with her mental health, and an alleged abortionist. What future awaits Charlotte, Pétronille, and Geneviève together?
