Summary:
Seventy-year-old Louise looks out over the Amstel from her apartment. On the bank, a plastic sandbox in the shape of a blue shell awaits collection by the parks department. One evening, she sees someone trying to push the sand shell into the water and hurries towards it.
Once at the bank, the person has disappeared and the shell drifts down the river. Louise doesn't hesitate for a moment, jumps into the water and swims after it to prevent it from sinking to the bottom. Halfway, to her shock, she discovers something moving inside the shell. She makes a decision that will take her back to things she thought she had long left behind.
Aan de oever van de rivier is a novel about letting go and the fear of loss. A story about the choices we make ourselves and the choices that are made for us.
