Summary:

If the world around you dictates the norm, how free are you to be yourself?

Marc is everything that Veurssen, in South Limburg, expects of him. Married to his childhood sweetheart, father of two children, and a dedicated villager. One thing he knows for sure: some things are best kept hidden.

Job lived briefly in Veurssen as a teenager. He was an eccentric outsider in the village. After a year, he left, traveled the world and eventually ended up in Brussels.

Years later, their paths cross again. What begins as a renewed acquaintance ultimately shakes Marc's carefully constructed existence.

'Vrijhaven' is a poignant novel about the tension between loyalty and longing, between who you are and who you think you should be.

Cyriel Heuts (1985) returned to his native region in South Limburg after living in Amsterdam for ten years. He worked as a journalist and presenter for regional media. 'Vrijhaven' is his debut novel.
